New Oriental Food Store

This is one of my favorite Asian food stores in Iowa. It’s smaller than many, but it has been in business a long time, and I’m a regular. They have Thai, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese products. They’ve also added to their selection over the years, adding Indian spices and other middle eastern ingredients. The prices are reasonable, and the quality is good. I usually get my tofu, shallots, ginger, pok choy, eggplant, sprouts, gochujang, ramen (authentic Korean ramen, which is much better than the cheap ones we ate as poor students), rice, noodles, sriracha, sesame oil, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, sushi ingredients, miso paste, and more recently I get a lot of Indian spices and legumes. The frozen gyoza are good, too, and there’s a wide array of frozen fish and meat products. And I’m constantly discovering new ingredients. They also sell Asian beef jerky, and fried eggrolls, and Thai springrolls. They take a credit or debit card, but you have to pay a dollar for charges under 25$. Miyabi 9, the best sushi restaurant in Des Moines (and maybe Iowa), is across the street.
